Because Kindness Matters
Is there a more nobel cause than to make your city “America’s Kindest City?” This is precisely what Carlton Lund, visionary behind the Kindness Meter Project, aimed to do when he began this quest over 15 years ago.
It All Began With a Sign
On January 8th, 2015, hundreds of citizens of Carlsbad gathered at the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and historic Highway 101 to inaugurate the newly erected city sign. This ceremony was the culmination of 15 years of effort lead by Carlton Lund and other prominent members of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and City Council. This gift to the city of Carlsbad to commemorate the Chamber of Commerce’s 90th Anniversary of service to the city, was made possible through the initial act of kindness from Taylor Made Golf Corporation, who donated $225,000 to the project.
The original plans and design for the city sign included both a 5 foot tall casting of “Darlene the Dolphin,” by famed oceanic artist Wyland, as well as a Kindness Meter at the sign’s base. Lund conceptualized the Kindness Meter as a place where families could teach their children about giving back to the community by donating a few coins as they enjoyed a stroll downtown. While neither Darlene the Dolphin or the original Kindness Meter made it into the final approved design downtown, the idea of making Carlsbad “America’s Kindest City” had already taken root.
Feeding Darlene the Dolphin
Today, several Kindness Meters have been erected around North County San Diego with 100% of the proceeds benefiting a number of charitable organizations in the community including the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, Carlsbad Educational Foundation, Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, and The Moonlight Cultural Foundation. These solar powered, credit card accepting meters were donated in yet another act of kindness by San Diego-based parking meter company, IPS Group, Inc.
Near each of the Kindness Meters, kids and adults alike can enjoy Wyland’s image of Darlene the Dolphin with caption “Feed Darlene,” a throwback the the original concept of the overall project.
